carpet cleanedThe last thing you want after having your carpet cleaned is that shrinking feeling. No, that’s not you after you’ve paid out the costly bill, but instead it’s your carpet! It’s true, If your carpet cleaner of choice fails to implement the correct procedures then you can be left with a shrunken carpet. In the majority of cases when this happens it’s usually rendered useless and can end up costing you hundreds of dollars, especially if you need to replace it. In order to avoid the stress and worry that a shrinking carpet can bring, we need to take a closer look at why this phenomenon occurs.

What types of carpet shrink?

You’ll be pleased to know that not every carpet type is prone to shrinking when cleaned however there are 2 types of carpet that are certainly more prone to it than others. These are Axminister and Wilton carpets. Axministers have a wool face and a jute backing. When the jute backing becomes wet through poor cleaning practices, it can shrink leaving you with a carpet that’s less than desirable.

Wiltons on the other hand are made using a polypropylene faced fibre together with a jute backing. The trouble is that because the polypropylene simply can’t hold any moisture it filters straight through to the jute backing and like the Axminister, is also prone to shrinking.

What causes them to shrink?

In essence it’s usually down to poor cleaning methods. This is either through using cheap underpowered equipment which simply can’t extract enough water, or it could be down to bad practices by the cleaners such as applying way too much spraying agent.

How can you avoid this from happening?

Well you could of course never clean them, but that’s like defeating the object of maintaining the life of your carpet in the first place. Instead a highly experienced cleaning company will have the know-how to deal with a wide variety of different carpet types. As such, after an initial inspection, they’ll understand exactly how to approach each carpet. This is usually done with high-powered hot water extraction units and eco-friendly cleaning products to ensure that your carpet is treated with the respect that it deserves.

So the bottom line is that if you want to truly avoid that shrinking feeling when it comes to your carpets, don’t do it yourself, unless of course you know exactly what you’re doing. What’s more, if you’re going to call in the professionals, then make sure that they’re exactly that!
