How To Avoid Your Carpet Making You Sick

To Avoid Your Carpet

To Avoid Your Carpet Carpets are an important part of many homes and certainly add a feeling of warmth and comfort to any room. Unfortunately, the carpets that you love can cause you to develop health problems such as allergies, asthma, and skin problems. Fortunately there are several things that you can do to prevent this from happening.

Be aware of any unusual smells

Your home should smell fresh and clean so if you happen to notice that it smells musty and unpleasant, then the problem could lie with your carpets. If your carpet has recently got wet and not been dried out quickly, or you suspect you may have mould in a room, then the smell could be from mould that is growing on your carpet. If this is the case then your carpet may need replacing.

Be sure your vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter

Even the professionals tend to disagree as to how many times a carpet should be vaccumed, but we would suggest that twice a week if possible, is the right amount of times to aim for. If you’ve got pets then you may need to vac your carpets more frequently. The best type of vacuum cleaner to use is one that has a HEPA filter since these remove dirt and dust more effectively than traditional cleaners.

Have your carpets cleaned by a professional

Even if you continuously vacuum your carpets twice a week or more, you’ll need to have them cleaned at least once a year. We’ve written in previous blogs why DIY cleaning is best avoided so use a reputable professional cleaning company instead for the best results. The hot water extraction method used by many cleaning companies is by far the most effective carpet cleaning method and is recommended by the majority of carpet manufacturers. Not only does it use the minimum of chemicals but it also extracts the majority of water so that carpets dry faster.

Replace carpets where needed

Carpets tend to accummulate a build up of irritants over the years which is one reason for replacing them. Carpets also wear out over time and will need eventual replacement.

Use a doormat

By using a doormat at the entrance to all of your doorways, you can prevent dirt and dust being carried from the soles of a person’s shoes throughout the house. Door mats are relatively inexpensive but have the ability to help your carpets last several years longer.

Clean up spills immediately

Any spillages that occur on your carpets should be cleared up right away, or as soon as possible afterwards. The quicker you can deal with a stain the less chance there is of it sinking into the depths of your carpet. It also reduces any bacteria that could accummulate.

A word about stains – always blot them with a clean white cloth as rubbing will spread the stain even further. Use clear cold water to start off with and if that doesn’t remove the stain then try blotting with a mild cleansing agent. The act of blotting puts pressure on the stain and should make it easier for you to remove.

If you still can’t remove the stain then a professional cleaning company should be able to assist as they have access to a wider variety of cleansing solutions than you can buy in your local store.
