It’s fair to say that there is a lot written about pest control and how to manage it. In fact all you have to do is to type in ‘getting rid of mice’ and there are 1001 different web sites giving you varying sorts of advice. Some of it good and some of it…well… not so. Myth 1 – Cheese makes great mouse bait
I’m sure that we’ve all seen and enjoyed those Tom and Jerry cartoons of the mouse willing to risk life and limb (and usually coming up trumps) for a piece of cheese. However does this theory of mice actually liking cheese have any grounding in fact? Well, recent research has proven that not only are mice fairly ‘non nonplussed’ about cheese, but there is evidence to support the fact that they may not even like it. Instead they are more attracted to sugary foods such as grains and fruit.
Myth 2 – Pests don’t like clean houses right?
Another popular myth is that if you have a spotlessly clean house then you won’t be besieged by an invasion of pests. Whilst there is an element of truth in the fact that a clean house is more resistant to pests than one that hasn’t seen a duster this side of the millennium, pests such as fleas, bed bugs and termites don’t really care how dirty or clean your house is. Unfortunately no amour of disinfectant and polish is going to keep them at bay.
Myth 3 – I can’t have fleas because I don’t own a pet!
Although fleas do prefer to feed off animals such as cats and dogs, they will actually use humans if there are no pets available. Even though your chances of suffering an invasion of the little critters is significantly decreased without a pet, there are a multitude of cases of people suffering an infestation who don’t own one. There are many things that you can do to ensure that your property is less prone to getting an infestation of fleas, but it would be wrong to assume that if you are a pet free zone, your house will automatically be flea-free.
