As a home owner you get used to dealing with everyday problems that occur, but when it comes to water damage, now that’s a different matter. If your carpets have been damaged by flood water then it’s extremely important to deal with the situation promptly and to restore the damage in the correct way. The good news is that it’s often possible to fully restore water damaged flooring if action is taken promptly. Since water damage isn’t an everyday matter, many of our customers are unsure of the action to take if they come home to find themselves knee deep in water when they open their front door. So, we thought we’d take this opportunity to answer some of the most common questions that we get asked about water damaged carpets. So, let’s dive straight in …..

What should I do if water damages my carpet?

No matter what sort of water damage, it’s always imperative to act as quickly as possible. The quicker that water is extracted and removed, the greater the chance of salvaging your carpets and not having to replace your flooring. When we say speed is of the essence, we’re talking 24-48 hours maximum to clean up and dry out the carpet.

In most cases, it’s best to seek the advice of an experienced technician. They can assess the damage and give you advice on the best course of action to take. It’s also important to contact your insurance company as soon as you can to discuss your options.

Will it be possible to restore my carpet or will I need to replace it?

To be honest we can’t really give an answer to this question without having seen the damage first hand. For example if the flood water is relatively clean, being the result of say a leaky pipe, this can be cleaned up safely. However, if the water is contaminated having come from a toilet that has over flowed or a flooded river, then it’s unlikely that restoration will be possible. Flooding caused by lightly coloured water, as opposed to black (sewage) water is always less serious

What is the process for restoring a flood damaged carpet?

  • First a thorough inspection will be carried out to assess the situation

  • The water will then be removed using a powerful vacuum designed for water extraction

  • A dehumidifier will be placed in the room to control the level of moisture and prevent further damage to the carpet

  • Powerful fans will be utilised around the room and left on full speed for up to 12 hours. It’s important to keep off the carpet during this time.

Should I call a professional?
