How To Stop Dirt From Entering Your Home

How To Stop Dirt From Entering Your HomeKeeping your home clean can feel like being on a merry-go-round. No sooner have you cleaned it then it seems that within no time at all the dust is back again. To avoid cleaning your home every day, assuming you even have the time to do so, it’s best if you can prevent dirt from entering your home in the first place. You know the old saying “prevention is better than cure” and it’s the same with cleaning. The less build-up of dirt and dust, the easier it is to keep on top of cleaning. So how exactly can you prevent dirt and dust particles from entering your home?

Use a doormat

A mat placed at the entrance of every doorway is one of the easiest ways to prevent dirt being trampled throughout your home. The simple act of wiping your shoes on the mat before entering a room is an effective way of reducing the amount of dirt that gets carried in on the bottom of your shoes. The only maintenance involved is to shake the mat away from the door to get rid of any dirt deposits. The right type of doormat should be made from acrylic, as this is easier to care for, with a rubber or vinyl backing. If you’re using an outside mat, then a rubber one with a wire rack attached to catch the dust is recommended.

Adopt a no shoe policy

An alternative to worrying about how clean your shoes are when entering your home is to remove them altogether. Keep a shoe rack handy at the entrance to your door, placed on top of a mat to stop dirt from getting beyond this point.

Don’t forget your pets

If you’ve got pets then keep a towel handy so you can wipe their paws and dry their coats before allowing them past the front door. It’s also a good idea to brush your pets outside to avoid pet hair lying around the house. Regular grooming prevents an accumulation of pet dander and hair.

Clean vents and change filters

You’ve probably noticed that dust can settle onto external vents as it’s blown around by the wind. Try wiping vents on a regular basis and clean your filters and this is less likely to happen. In addition remember to change the filters in your air conditioning or HVAC units, which will also lessen the amount of dust being blown around indoors.

Limit opening your windows

Although it’s lovely to fling open your windows to bring in the fresh air, the movement of air also moves dust around inside the home. Try and limit the times you leave your windows open and always keep external doors shut.

Whatever you do, some dust will still find its way into your home but if you introduce some of these simple ideas, then you can reduce the amount of dirt and dust that gathers and not have to spend so much time on cleaning your home.
