Odours From CarpetLets face it nobody likes a smelly carpet. It can be highly embarrassing when you have visitors and it isn’t particular pleasant for the family who have to live with it day in and day out. The problem is that carpet odours can be caused by a vast array of elements. These include animal urine, cooking spills, cigarette smoke, water stains, and mildew to name but a few. What’s more they can be difficult to remove.

However for some people it isn’t just the smell that might make someone feel a touch queasy. For many people, certain carpet odours or conditions can lead to a whole host of other problems, such as allergic reactions or breathing difficulties. Many of these odours can’t be removed simply by applying carpet freshener and vacuuming. On the contrary they need a little know-how and some elbow grease to eradicate them once and for all. Here’s some top tips to eradicating carpet odour once and for all.

Assemble your tools of the trade

First of all you’ll need a spray bottle, some household vinegar, some baking soda and some warm water. Start by applying a liberal sprinkling of baking soda to the soiled area. Then allow the baking powder to work into the surface by leaving it (preferably over night). After at least 24 hours sweep the remaining surface powder up using a dustpan and brush. Finally vacuum the area with a strong suction vacuum cleaner to remove the powder that’s infiltrated deep in the carpet fibres. Sniff the area to see if the smell has disappeared.

Persistence is key

Some odours (particularly strong ones) are notoriously difficult to remove, so if it doesn’t shift right away, be prepared to reapply more baking powder and repeat the process over the next 24/48 hours. Persistence is definitely the key to getting rid of stronger odours. If the odour is still present after one or two more tries then move to stage 2

Apply the vinegar

Firstly vinegar is an acid, so if you’re not entirely sure you may want check your carpet before application. Assuming all is okay then spray the vinegar directly onto the area using a spray bottle. The trick is to apply sufficient vinegar to remove the odour but not so much that it soaks the carpet. Next allow the vinegar to soak in for around 15 minutes then blot with a clean lint-free cloth to remove the excess. Next rinse by spraying the area with clean cold water and press with another clean dry cloth to eradicate as much moisture as possible, Finally, leave to dry naturally.

This process will eradicate the vast majority of odours if you are prepared to take your time and be patient.
