For many people a house just isn’t a home without a pet, but being a pet owner doesn’t lend itself to keeping your house clean. The good news is that we’ve put together a few hints and tips which with regular effort and sticking to a routine, will make having a clean house with your furry friends that much easier to attain.

Prevention

The saying is that ‘prevention is better than cure’ and there’s never been a truer word said.

Grooming

Get into a routine of spending just 5 or 10 minutes each day grooming your cat or dog. Not only does it help you bond with your pet and they learn to enjoy it, but you’ll be amazed at how much less pet hair is floating around your home. Daily brushing also gets rid of dead skin and your pet will look and smell better for it too.

Odours

Try placing a fabric softener sheet with a lovely scent beneath the chair cushions or sofa where your pet best likes to hang out.

Dirt

Place a small mat both on the outside and the inside of the door to each room and this will help stop the dirt from paws in its tracks. Be sure your mats are washable so you can stick them into the washing machine as and when necessary.

Clean up kit

To quickly clean any accidental pet mess keep a small kit handy below your kitchen sink, comprising of a bucket, spray stain removers, paper towels, old rags, and disinfectant wipes. The sooner any mess can be dealt with the easier it is to remove.

Pet food

Keep all pet food covered in containers. Do not leave it laying around where it can be exposed to ants and vermin.

Aftermath

Most pets shed hair so its important to stay on top of the vacuuming. If you live on your own with just one pet then probably vacuuming once or twice a week should suffice. Otherwise we’d recommend adding on a vacuum for every other person or pet. For a large family with more than one pet, we’d recommend a quick daily vacuum.

Professional carpet cleaning

As well as routine cleaning it’s a good idea to have your carpets professionally cleaned since pet dander, hair, dust mites etc. can all bury themselves deep into the fibres of your carpet. If any member of the family suffers from allergies, then you should consider having your carpets cleaned professionally at least twice a year.
